I have a question for you, are you guys really that full of yourselves that you think that not only do I want to watch your film again, but I want to watch it without special effects, decent sound or music?
- Well, not exactly. Truth be told, there's a lot of things about our movie we could have done better. We know that. The thing is, we didn't know that at the time we were making it. It's easy to look at the movie now and say to ourselves, "Oh man, if only I knew then what I know now, we could have made that look sooooo much better."
So, you're trying to make excuses for your movie's shortcomings.
- Hm, that's one way of looking at it, I suppose.
-
- Another way of looking at it would be that we're putting ourselves out for public humiliation so you can see for yourself all the mistakes we made, things we overlooked and opportunities we missed, so if you ever make a film of your own, you can anticipate and hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls we met in our journey. We've learned from them, why shouldn't you? :)
-
- On the flip side, there were some things that we pretty successfully fixed or mended between this cut and the final product and maybe you could get ideas from those as well.
Okay, but what if I don't want to make my own film?
- Well, maybe you just enjoy watching crappy unfinished products. Or perhaps you're just curious. I don't know. You don't have to watch it, you know.
What's the deal with this "Director's Intro to the Rough Cut"? A little on the narcissistic side, ain't it?
- This is a short 'Making Of' style featurette that was included on the DVD that we made for the cast and crew. The idea was that it would help introduce the background of the movie to their family and friends who wanted to know more about this project that they were involved in... and then lead them into the unspoken horror that is the unpolished Rough Cut.
-
- As far as it perhaps taking itself a little too seriously, yeah that was tongue-in-cheek. After years of watching our favorite movies (like, say for example, Star Wars) on DVDs with all this cool bonus material and commentaries and featurettes, we decided that we were going to take this opportunity to mock up our own DVD with all the trimmings that a real Star Wars movie would have.... even though ours was only 18 minutes long and only cost $1300.
-
- In a nutshell, it was a chance to emulate our heroes and we weren't about to pass it up. :)
Wow, this rough cut is really quite bad.
- Yeah, don't say I didn't warn you. If you make it through the whole thing I'll be impressed.
